What is Unix Timestamp?
Unix timestamp is the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC. Also known as "epoch time".
Why Use Unix Timestamp?
- Works independently of time zones
- Date comparison is done with simple math
- Takes up little space in databases
- Universally supported in programming languages
The 2038 Problem
On 32-bit systems, Unix timestamp will overflow on January 19, 2038. Transitioning to 64-bit systems solves this.
